Generative AI: EdTech

Generative AI in edtech

Learners and teachers are already using AI. The question for an edtech platform is whether that AI is grounded in your course, safe for the age group, and honest about what it does not know. We build AI tutors that teach rather than hand over answers, rubric based grading that a human marker moderates, and authoring tools that turn your curriculum into question banks, with children's data rules designed in from the first sprint.

Key highlights

  • We build AI tutors grounded in your course content, rubric based grading with human moderation, question generation for authors, and captioning and translation.
  • Tutors use retrieval over your own curriculum and cite the lesson they used, so they stay on syllabus and do not invent textbook references.
  • Grading is calibrated against a human marked set, and low confidence or high stakes marks always go to a human marker.
  • Learner facing features get content filtering, safeguarding escalation and activity logs, in line with COPPA, the UK Children's Code and DfE expectations.
  • We have shipped AI assisted grading with human review in a multi tenant tutoring LMS for a UK edtech startup.

Why edtech AI projects stall

Generative AI fits learning naturally, which is why so many edtech AI features ship fast and then get switched off. They stall on safety for younger learners, trust from teachers and parents, and grading that cannot be defended.

Tutors that just give the answer. A general chatbot completes the homework for the student. Teachers ban it, parents complain, and the feature that was supposed to differentiate the platform becomes a liability.
Off syllabus and invented references. The assistant teaches a method the exam board does not use, or cites a page in a textbook that does not exist. Teachers lose trust after the first example and stop recommending it.
Marks nobody can defend. An AI grade on an essay arrives with no rubric reasoning. When a parent or student challenges it, there is no evidence of how it was reached and no human who checked it.
Children's data in third party models. Learner essays and chat logs are sent to a model provider with default retention settings. Under COPPA, FERPA or the Children's Code, that is a procurement blocker for every school and district.
No safeguarding path. A learner discloses something worrying to the AI tutor. There is no detection, no escalation to a designated safeguarding lead and no log, which is exactly what schools ask about first.
Authoring still takes months. Writing question banks, worked examples and differentiated versions by hand is slow, so new courses launch late and practice content runs thin where learners need it most.
Use cases

Generative AI use cases we build for edtech

Each use case is grounded in your own curriculum and content, with teachers, tutors or authors reviewing anything that affects a learner's record.

Course grounded AI tutor

RAG over your lessons, worked examples and mark schemes, with a tutoring policy that asks guiding questions and gives hints rather than final answers. Responses cite the lesson used and stay within the course, age and level.

Rubric based grading and feedback

Short and long answers are scored against your rubric with structured outputs, criterion level reasoning and written feedback, calibrated on a held out human marked set. Low confidence and high stakes marks go to a human marker for moderation.

Question and content generation

Authors generate question banks, distractors, worked solutions and differentiated versions aligned to curriculum objectives, tagged by topic and difficulty, then reviewed and approved before anything reaches learners.

Captioning, translation and summaries

Whisper based transcription of lessons with an editorial pass, translated captions, chapter markers and revision summaries, improving accessibility for WCAG 2.2 AA and reaching learners in more languages.

Learner insight for tutors

An assistant explains a learner's progress from your LMS and xAPI data in plain language, highlights misconceptions from recent answers and drafts a parent update for the tutor to edit.

Teacher and admin copilot

Lesson plan drafts from your schemes of work, report comment drafts from recorded marks, and answers to staff questions from your own policies, cutting admin time without touching assessment decisions.

How we deliver

From one course to a governed rollout

  1. 01
Use case discovery and data readiness

We agree the age groups, subjects and use cases, review your content rights and learner data flows, and map COPPA, FERPA, GDPR-K and Children's Code duties. Output: a written scope with safety requirements and acceptance criteria.

  2. 02
    Evaluation harness and prototype

A golden set is built with teachers: marked scripts for grading, and tutoring conversations including off topic, unsafe and answer seeking prompts. Two or three models are tested on accuracy, safety and cost.

  3. 03
Guarded pilot with teachers in the loop

A small cohort uses the feature with teacher review of marks, content filtering and safeguarding escalation switched on. Feedback and disagreements between AI and human markers are logged and fed back into the harness.

  4. 04
    Production rollout with monitoring

Rollout by cohort or tenant, with monitoring of grading agreement, filter hits, safeguarding alerts and cost per learner. Models and prompts are reviewed each term and before exam season.

AI governance for edtech

Edtech AI serves children and affects learning records, so the governance bar is higher than most sectors. We design to the strictest regime that applies to each learner cohort.

COPPA (US under 13) FERPA (US institutions) GDPR-K and UK GDPR UK Age Appropriate Design Code DfE generative AI product safety expectations EU AI Act (education high risk) WCAG 2.2 AA CCPA and CPRA

Children's data is not training data. Learner content goes only to model endpoints with retention disabled and no training on your data, or to self hosted open weight models. Identifiers are stripped before prompts where possible, consent and deletion flow through every sub-processor, and child accounts follow the parental consent rules of COPPA, GDPR-K and the Children's Code.

Learner facing AI is filtered, logged and escalated. The UK Department for Education's generative AI product safety expectations cover filtering harmful content, monitoring and reporting, security, privacy and governance. We build input and output filters tuned to the age group, safeguarding detection that alerts a designated lead, and activity logs schools can review.

Assessment keeps a human accountable. The EU AI Act lists AI used to evaluate learning outcomes, steer learning or monitor students during tests as high risk, and prohibits emotion recognition in education settings. We keep a human marker accountable for grades, document how each mark was reached, and do not build emotion inference into learning tools.

Models and tooling we use for edtech AI

Strong reasoning models for tutoring and grading, small fast models for filtering and tagging, and standards that keep AI output inside your LMS.

FAQ

Common questions

It depends on the use case and the number of learners, so we start with a fixed price prototype and price production from a written scope. Model costs are passed through at cost and reported per learner or per graded script, which matters for pricing your own plans. You get a written estimate within 48 hours, and our pricing page explains how engagements are structured.
Yes, with the right controls. Learner data goes only to endpoints with retention disabled and no training, or to self hosted models, identifiers are minimised, and parental consent and deletion follow COPPA, GDPR-K and the UK Children's Code. We document every sub-processor so schools and districts can complete their reviews.
By grounding it in your course and testing it before learners see it. The tutor retrieves from your lessons and mark schemes and cites them, refuses or redirects off syllabus questions, and is tested against a golden set that includes answer seeking, off topic and unsafe prompts. Filters and logs run in production so problems are caught early.
Usually 8 to 16 weeks. A measured prototype on one subject takes about 4 weeks, followed by a pilot with a small cohort and teacher review, then wider rollout. We plan around term dates so the pilot is not running during exam season.
For formative feedback and first marking on clear rubrics, often yes, when measured. We calibrate against a human marked set, report agreement per criterion, and route low confidence and high stakes marks to a human marker. We do not recommend unmoderated AI marks for qualifications or high stakes decisions.
Embed a ready made tool if it covers your subjects and you are happy for learner data to sit with that vendor. Build when the tutor needs your curriculum, pedagogy and brand, when you need the data and grading logic inside your own LMS, or when school procurement requires you to control every sub-processor.
