Industry: Energy and Utilities

Software development for energy and utilities

Software for a grid that changes faster than its IT. We connect meters, SCADA, GIS and billing into data your operators and customers can act on, build field and outage apps crews actually use, and keep operational systems segmented and auditable. Senior engineers own the architecture, AI coding agents carry the volume, and every line is reviewed by a human.

Key highlights

  • We build meter data pipelines, outage and field service apps, DER monitoring and customer portals that sit around your core utility systems.
  • Interval data from AMI head ends is validated, estimated and edited (VEE) before it reaches billing, so customers are billed on clean reads.
  • We integrate with SAP IS-U, Oracle Utilities, Esri ArcGIS and ADMS platforms using the IEC CIM model rather than point to point scripts.
  • Anything that touches operational technology is designed for NERC CIP or IEC 62443 zones and conduits from the start.
  • A focused first release, such as a mobile outage reporting flow or a meter exceptions dashboard, usually ships in 8 to 12 weeks.

Industry challenges we solve

Utilities run some of the most reliable infrastructure in the world on IT that was never designed for millions of meters, two way power flows or customers who expect live updates on their phone.

Smart meter data that nobody trusts. Millions of interval reads arrive every day, but gaps, spikes and communication failures leak into billing, and the exceptions queue grows faster than the back office can clear it.
Outage updates customers hear last. Crews know the restoration time, the control room knows the fault location, and the customer is still on hold. Social media fills the gap before the website does.
Field crews on paper and radio. Work orders are printed, as built changes are sketched by hand, and GIS updates happen weeks later, so the next crew works from an outdated network model.
DER the grid cannot see. Rooftop solar, batteries and EV chargers are connecting faster than planning tools can model them, and operators have little live visibility at the distribution edge.
Billing systems nobody wants to touch. Tariff changes, new time of use products and regulatory price updates take months because the CIS is heavily customised and the people who built it have left.
Security reviews that stall every project. Any change near SCADA or substation networks needs a CIP or IEC 62443 assessment, and projects designed without one get stopped at the last gate.
Capabilities

Our energy and utilities software capabilities

We build the data, field and customer layers around your core utility systems, and integrate them on a common network model.

Smart metering and MDM

Ingestion from AMI head ends over DLMS/COSEM and vendor APIs, VEE rules, exception workflows and integration with meter data management platforms such as Itron, Siemens EnergyIP and Oracle Utilities MDM.

Outage management support

Outage map and notification services fed from your OMS or ADMS, SMS and app alerts with estimated restoration times, and customer outage reporting that feeds back into fault location.

Field service and asset apps

Offline first mobile apps for inspections, work orders and as built capture, synced with SAP PM, Maximo or IFS and Esri ArcGIS so the network model stays current.

Grid and DER monitoring

Telemetry from substations, feeders and inverters, DER registration and hosting capacity workflows, and demand response integration over OpenADR or IEEE 2030.5 where your programme uses them.

Billing and customer portals

Self service portals and apps for usage, bills, payments, moves and tariff switching, integrated with SAP IS-U, Oracle Customer Cloud Service or Oracle CC&B, plus Green Button data access for US customers.

Analytics and load forecasting

A governed data platform that joins meter, network, weather and customer data for load forecasting, loss analysis and regulatory reporting, with dashboards for operations and finance.

How we deliver

From one workflow to the whole network

  1. 01
    Systems and risk mapping

We map your CIS, MDM, OMS, GIS and work management systems, and classify what touches operational technology. Output: an architecture, a security boundary and a ranked use case list.

  2. 02
    Ship one workflow

One high value flow, such as meter exceptions or outage notifications, built end to end and run in parallel with the current process so results can be checked.

  3. 03
    Integrate on a common model

Interfaces move to an integration layer based on the IEC CIM, so the next system plugs in without another set of point to point scripts.

  4. 04
    Scale and hand over

Roll out to further regions or service lines, add forecasting and analytics on the data now flowing, and train your team to operate and change it.

Compliance and security considerations

Utilities are critical infrastructure. Security, market rules and customer data protection shape the architecture as much as any feature does.

NERC CIP (North America) IEC 62443 OT security IEC 61968 and 61970 CIM IEC 61850 awareness NIS2 (EU) and UK NIS Regulations REMIT market data Ofgem licence obligations SOC 2 and ISO 27001 expectations GDPR, UK GDPR and CCPA

OT stays segmented. Anything near SCADA, EMS or substation networks is designed around IEC 62443 zones and conduits, and for North American bulk electric system assets, the NERC CIP requirements for electronic security perimeters, access control and logging. Data leaves the operational network one way through a DMZ.

Market and regulatory data is auditable. Where you trade wholesale energy in Europe or Great Britain, we design data flows that support REMIT transaction and inside information reporting. Tariff, complaint and vulnerability data is kept traceable for Ofgem and other regulator reporting.

Customer and meter data is personal data. Half hourly or interval consumption can reveal how people live, so we treat it as personal data under GDPR and UK GDPR, with consent, granularity controls and retention rules built into the platform.

Tech stack we use for energy and utilities

FAQ

Common questions

Yes. We work alongside SAP IS-U, Oracle Utilities, Itron and Siemens platforms and your OMS or ADMS through their supported APIs and message interfaces, ideally on an IEC CIM based integration layer. We extend your core systems rather than proposing to replace them.
Yes, with your compliance team in the loop. For anything near BES Cyber Systems we design to the relevant CIP requirements for electronic security perimeters, access management, logging and change control, and document the design so your CIP evidence is easier to produce. Most of our work sits outside the perimeter and receives data one way.
Yes. Our field apps are offline first. Crews download work packs and maps before they leave, capture inspections, photos and as built changes without signal, and the app syncs and resolves conflicts when the device reconnects.
With a VEE layer before billing. Reads are validated against rules for gaps, spikes, reverse flow and register mismatches, estimated where allowed by your market rules, and routed to an exceptions queue with the evidence a back office user needs to resolve them quickly.
Usually 8 to 12 weeks for one workflow. That covers systems mapping, the security boundary, and one production ready flow such as meter exceptions or outage notifications. Wider rollouts follow in phases sized from what the first one teaches us.
You do. Every engagement includes full IP assignment and an NDA, the code lives in your repositories, and meter, network and customer data stays in your own cloud or on premise environment.
